Just like the title says. Also this is my first real post to oppo, previously I've only replied to others. And like my name says I'm an AMG technician. More specifically, I work at an MB dealer and my title is "systems technician, AMG specialist". In case you didn't know, not every MB dealer is an AMG dealer. For those of us who are, only two techs can be listed as AMG specialists. This means that I get to work on more than half of the AMG's that come into my shop. I'm currently right in the middle of a fairly large job, replacing the heads on a CL65, M275 twin turbo V12. What I believe happened is that somebody thought it would be a good idea to run e85 through it a few times, or some other caustic chemical. So the valves and valve seats are pitted, which caused low compression, which led to misfires and a check engine light. I'm not really one to take pictures, so I don't have that many. But I figured you guys would enjoy this!

wow, you have an awesome job. I don't think I want to know how much that customer is spending to have you fix their v12...

You must have a lot of patience. Can you build an engine? If so, I'm calling you an AMG engine master (or whatever they call their engine builders)

Got kinja'd on my first post! This pic was supposed to be in there too! I can and have built engines. Doesn't happen often, but there were a couple M156's from c63's with oil consumption issues. One of them I did just pistons/rings, the other I did a bare block with new pistons/rings. No comebacks! I had a pic where I had signed my name on the builders plaque with a dry erase marker but I can't seem to find it.

Nice. I love British cars, but I don't envy you having to work on them, or Lexus for that matter, me and Asian cars just don't get along. I have spent some time working on jaguar, lotus, Aston, and even Morgan.

wish my shop had that, but we don't see SLR's, we've only been open for not quite 2 year's, so we don't have some of the rarer more specialised stuff from older/discontinued cars.

It's such a contrast with British cars. They make a good product but man are just poorly made, Lotus especially. I literally have nightmares of Lotus jobs. And of course under warranty :( There is a LR and Jag dealer across the street and sometimes send half the items on the delivery truck back before PDI.

That's cool. Welcome to here my friend.
And i miss my old merc. W140 S600L. Anyway, i read in wikipedia AMG had a performance package for the 600, is it true?

well if it's on the internet it must be true! Depending on the year and model, yes. I think for the old m120 it would have been upgraded to 7.3 liters, then came the twin turbo 65's. But I haven't been around long enough to know all about that older stuff. I'm much more familiar with the last 10-15 years.

my dealer is the original Merc importer of my state. It been open since the early 60's. We do see some SLR's but only our foreman works on them since that course was only available for a little bit and as you know has been removed. Asfor the Esprit, we have recomended cooling items to customers but they turn the jobs down because they eventually take them to independent shops. Plus, a lot of the parts have been taken off inventort and cant be ordered. Bulk hose and aftermarket stuff has been usd with service manager approval.

Hmmm
Mine was 1996. I know that, it's the S70 AMG. Buts somehow in wiki article they list AMG performance pack for the standard 6.0l, and that's weird.
At first i was hoping my car comes with that, since it got AMG bodykit and AMG exhaust, until i took it to dyno and it puts 380hp. But still, that's the best 380hp i ever had.

AFAIK the only level between four example an sl65 and sl600 would be just amg sport/appearance package. Newer cars have different levels, such as s -type and black series, but older ones did not. 380hp is pretty awesome for '96.

I have a feeling, and this is me just throwing something wildly out there, but you're going to be very popular around here.
Anyone ever bring in a 300SL?

Ican live without slr. I do work on sls and even old stuff, think 50's and 60's, like 190sl and 300sl. At least you have an awesome variety! Shouldn't ever get too bored!

Yes, 2 or 3 different ones have come through actually. Hardly anyone is allowed to touch them, maybe 5 people in the whole store, including me (yay!).

Unfortunately the customers don't usually let the cars out of their sight, understandably. So for the sake of professionalism I don't take pictures or drool like a paraplegic in a coma.

Don't blame you. Hell, if I had a 300SL I'd probably try to sit in it throughout service.
I would have a hard time not telling them, at least once, that they have a very beautiful car.

Oh my god can I have your job?!? PLEASE!
I'm also a tech, but unlike you I'm a newbie; I've only been doing it for a few years and I'm only certified in Volkswagen’s, but I want to work for Mercedes so bad, I enjoy working on them the most. And driving them is amazing too.

If you don't like where you are at don't be afraid to look for something better. The funny thing is, I was at a low point in my career a few years ago and had applied at a VW dealer. Had an interview, drug test, and everything, but they didn't end up hiring me for whatever reason. That was only a few months before I started at Mercedes, where I'm now #2 in command at only 28. I guess the point is, don't just sit back and wait for your career to go where you want it to, make it go where you want it to.

Well, and the AMG obviously has moar powar :D
Yeah, but i still kinda wish it has the latter 7.3l AMG engine. 568hp in a very unassuming W140. And oh, give it straight pipe as well so it'll sound glorious.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm currently at an independent shop but I plan on looking for another job in the beginning of July. There's a government program that I can utilize and it will pay my future employer half of my wages to train me. I figure that gives me leverage to find a job, but the program is full until July, so I have to wait till then.
I'm only 22 so I have time to find the right fit, but I'm getting a little tired, and more than a little discouraged that I haven't found the right fit. I really liked Volkswagen, but it didn't work out because the manager at the time was an idiot and didn't know how to run his service department. I would love to go to a Mercedes dealer and hopefully come close to your success by your age. The only problem is my local Mercedes dealer is sub par, so it only leaves me with one real choice as the third one in my area is too far away. And I really don't want to go to BMW because I can't stand working on them, BUT, they are better than Japanese and American cars.

Totally butting in here...how do you like your S65? Really thinking of going after one in the near future.
